On April 9, 2013 at 13.00 -15.00, Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Walailak gave an academic lecture on "Basic Principle of Toxicology" to a class of 327 fourth year medical students at Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.
The lecture covers the categorization of toxin based on specific condition, regarding intoxication within the organs, causes and effects of intoxications, physiological components, severity of intoxications, and other concerning topics on the contributing variables of chemical intoxication, which can be divided into three main categories:
1. Chemical and Physical properties: Regarding molecular size, Melting point, and Detoxification process
2. Channels and pathways of intoxications (Mouth, Skin, Breathing), and the effects resulting from the varied levels of intoxication
3. Different conditions of the host, regarding genetics, age, sex, physical conditions, diet, and the surrounding environments
Moreover, the lecture also elaborated on frequent cases of intoxications such as the use of morphine as pain relievers can result in overdosage. Organophosphate pesticides can be absorbed through all pathways of the human body. Frequent absorption of DMN in a small amount over a long period of time can lead to liver cancer, while absorption of the chemical in huge amounts over a short period of time can lead to kidney cancer.
The lecture kindly given to Siriraj medical students by Professor Dr. Her Royal Higness Princess Chulabhorn has provided fundamental enrichments both in terms of knowledge and clinical applications on the diagnosis and treatments of patients with intoxications.
